Biographical Sketch: Brian O'CONNELL

Professor Brian OíConnellís career in education as a teacher, lecturer and administrator has spanned 37 years.

He has a B.A Degree from UWC, an Honours Degree in History from UNISA (with distinction), and M.A. and M.Ed Degrees from Columbia University in New York.

In 1985 he was appointed to the position of senior lecturer in Education at UWC. He held that position until 1988 when he was appointed Rector of the Athlone College of Education, in Paarl. In 1991 he was appointed Director of the School of Education at Peninsula Technikon (Pentech) and also became Director of the institutionís Academic Development Programme. In 1994, he became acting Vice-Rector, with responsibility for Student Affairs at Pentech. In 1995 he was appointed Head of the Western Cape Education Department, responsible for more than 2000 education institutions from K1 to K12, including eighteen Technical Colleges. In October 2001 he was appointed to the position of Rector and Vice-Chancellor (President) of the UWC, a position he still holds. He is also Professor in Education Leadership and Management. He has won a Fulbright Scholarship to the United States, two British Council grants and an Anglo-American Chairmanís Fund grant. In March 2002 he was appointed Professor of Leadership and Management in the Faculty of Education at UWC.

He has chaired many community organizations and served on many boards, committees and task teams including the South African Qualificationís Authority. For the past eight years he has been Chairman of the National Access Consortium Western Cape (NACWC). He currently chairs the Community Chest of South Africa, an affiliate of United Way International and represents the University Sector on SANAC (South African Aids Council).
